[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The New York Dream Foundation announced an award of thirty thousand dollars in educational scholarships this week. The scholarships are for undocumented immigrant students that have received outstanding grades, and/or have contributed to the development of their communities through community service. In June 2017, the foundation will award the scholarships to Long Island students beginning their university studies or those who are currently enrolled in a university and do not qualify to receive federal scholarships or educational loans due to their immigration status. Adam Tavares, president of the foundation, indicated to LTH that this announcement is due to the collaboration of corporations, as well as individuals, who have contributed to the aims and objectives of the foundation.
Motivating the “Dreamers”
“The immigrant students have much to contribute, but face various financial obstacles if they do not qualify for tuition assistance. With these scholarships, we hope to motivate the youngest generations to excel in school and to pursue their dreams,” stated Tavares.
He further added: “We must understand that they are the young men and women that constitute the future of this country and are looking for signals to become the pillars of development in their families, and thus, of their own communities. Those young men and women just need an opportunity to reach their dreams.”
A son of Immigrants
The son of a Colombian mother and Portuguese father, Tavares said that he is proud of his roots and has personal knowledge of the immigrant story through his own experience.
“My father came to New York at the age of 17 and started to work to carve out a future. After being married, my parents gave me the best support to achieve my dreams and become a professional. For this reason, I became a part of the Dream Foundation, to help the youth achieve their dreams in this country, because the hard work and sacrifice of someone who comes from a different country, without resources, without knowing the language, to get ahead and achieve success, is something that I highly admire of our immigrants.”
A total of seven scholarships
According to the announcement, the foundation will grant a total of seven scholarships. One for fifteen thousand dollars, another for ten thousand dollars, and the five remaining of one thousand dollars each. The bank of Bethpage Federal Credit Union donated a total of thirty thousand dollars which Tavares thanked for its generous contribution.
Applicants that qualify for scholarships must be high school students or be pursuing university studies, and who DO NOT possess a Legal Permanent Residence Card or Citizenship in this country. Among the eligible are undocumented students, DACA and TPS beneficiaries, as well as any person with a pending immigration case.
“It is important that high school students aspiring to scholarships maintain a minimum of a B average. Grades must be remarkable in the case of university students. All of the specifications and details are located on our website,” added Tavares.
Registration until the end of May
The students that would like to benefit from these scholarships have until the end of May to submit their applications. Applications can be downloaded through the organization’s website www.nydreamfoundation.org. A selective committee from the organization will review the applications and results will be announced next June.
About 4,500 undocumented students graduate from high school in New York every year. Of these students, less than ten percent decide to continue higher education due in large part to the lack of financial assistance to cover the high costs of facing a university career. The Dream Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization founded in 2012 by the immigration attorney David M. Anuncian becas para estudiantes indocumentados en Long Island
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]La Dream Foundation de Nueva York anunció esta semana un concurso de otorgamiento de becas educativas, por un total de 30 mil dólares, para estudiantes inmigrantes indocumentados, que observen notas sobresalientes, o que hayan contribuido al desarrollo de sus comunidades a través del servicio comunitario.
La fundación otorgará dichas becas en junio del 2017 a los estudiantes de Long Island que inicien sus estudios universitario, o a estudiantes que actualmente están cursando estudios en la universidad, y que no califican para recibir becas federales y asistencia de préstamos educativos, debido a su estatus migratorio.
Adam Tavares, presidente de la fundación señaló a LTH que este anuncio se da gracias a la colaboración de empresas, así como de individuos, que han contribuido con los fines y objetivos de la fundación.
Motivando a los “Dreamers”
“Los estudiantes inmigrantes tienen mucho que aportar, pero enfrentan muchos obstáculos financieros si no califican para recibir ayuda con la matrícula. Con estas becas, esperamos motivar a las generaciones más jóvenes a sobresalir en la escuela y a perseguir sus sueños”, señaló Tavares.
Y agregó: “Hay que entender que los jóvenes constituyen el futuro de este país y ellos están buscando señales para convertirse en pilares de desarrollo de sus familias y, por ende, de sus propias comunidades. Sólo necesitan una oportunidad para alcanzar sus sueños”, dijo.
Un hijo de inmigrantes
Tavares, hijo de madre colombiana y padre portugués, dijo que está orgulloso de sus raíces y sabe lo que es la historia del inmigrante, en su propia experiencia.
“Mi padre llegó a Nueva York a los 17 años y empezó a trabajar para labrarse un porvenir. Luego de casados, mis padres me dieron el mejor apoyo para conseguir mis ideales y convertirme en profesional. Por esta razón, me hice parte de la Fundación Dream, para ayudar a muchos jóvenes a conseguir sus sueños en este país, porque el empeño y sacrificio de alguien que viene de otro país, sin recursos, sin saber el idioma, para salir adelante y lograr alcanzar el éxito, es algo que yo admiro mucho de nuestros inmigrantes”.
Un total de siete becas
De acuerdo a lo anunciado, la fundación otorgará un total de siete becas, una por 15 mil dólares, otra por 10 mil dólares, y cinco restantes de mil dólares cada una, lo que suman en total 30 mil dólares, que fueron donados por el banco Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a la que Tavares agradeció por su generoso aporte.
Los aspirantes a calificar para conseguir las becas deben ser estudiantes de secundaria, o estar cursando estudios universitarios, y que NO posea una Tarjeta de Residencia o Ciudadanía de este país. Entre los elegibles están los estudiantes indocumentados, los beneficiarios de DACA y el TPS, así como cualquier persona con un caso de inmigración pendiente.
“Es importante que los estudiantes que aspiren a las becas deban tener un promedio B, mínimo, en sus calificaciones, para los estudiantes que están terminando la escuela secundaria. En el caso de los universitarios, sus calificaciones deben ser también notables. Todas las especificaciones y más detalles se encuentran en nuestra página web”, agregó Tavares.
Inscripción hasta fines de mayo
Los estudiantes que quieran beneficiarse de estas becas tienen plazo hasta fines de mayo para enviar sus solicitudes, que pueden bajar desde la página web de la organización www.nydreamfoundation.org. Las solicitudes serán analizadas por un Comité de Selección de la organización y los resultados se darán a conocer en junio próximo.
Cada año, unos 4,500 estudiantes indocumentados se gradúan de las escuelas secundarias en todo el estado de Nueva York. De ellos, menos del diez por ciento decide continuar educación superior, debido en gran medida a la falta de asistencia financiera para cubrir los altos costos que supone enfrentar una carrera universitaria.
